The Paulist Fathers were founded in 1858 as the first American order of priests by Fr. Isaac Hecker, CSP, a religious visionary whose work anticipated many modern directions in Catholic life. The Paulists work to proclaim the Gospel to today's people in America and Canada, to invite people to know Jesus in the Catholic tradition, to welcome Catholics back to the practice of their faith, and to build ecumenical and interfaith bridges with others. We work in cities, large secular campuses, and over the Internet, through radio, TV and publishing. (Isaac Thomas Hecker, Servant of God) |
The Paulists, founded in 1858, now serve in 15 locations throughout the United States, and also Toronto and Rome. Our first foundation was in New York City (59th Street and Columbus Ave.), where Fr. Hecker, our founder, is buried. From there we branched out, starting in 1894, to Washington, San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, Berkeley and other locations. With 150 priests today, seminarians study in Washington, DC, as they prepare to be today's missionaries.
